Kansas governor’s order shields clergy on same-sex marriage

*sigh* The hate just builds.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas’ governor told state government agencies Tuesday that they can’t punish ministers or religious groups for opposing same-sex marriage, and critics said he is sanctioning discrimination even as the state extends new benefits to gay and lesbian couples.

Gov. Sam Brownback issued an executive order in response to last month’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage across the nation. Brownback’s order said the “imposition” of gay marriage could lead to “potential infringements” of religious liberties.

Supreme Court lifts hold on gay marriage in Kansas

Follow-up on the story posted the other day…

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday said same-sex marriages can go ahead in Kansas in a decision that the state insists applies to only two counties.

Separately Wednesday, a federal judge struck down South Carolina’s ban on gay marriage as unconstitutional.

The nation’s highest court denied a request from Kansas to prevent gay and lesbian couples from marrying while the state fights the issue in court. The order is consistent with how the justices have handled recent requests from other states that have sought to keep their bans in place while they appealed lower court rulings in favor of gay and lesbian couples.

Westboro Baptist Church Founder Dies At 84

I hope the first thing that his god said to him was, “You sadly missed my point.”

Fred Phelps, the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, has died at the age of 84, according to two of his children.

His son, Timothy Phelps, confirmed to Kansas’ WIBW that Fred Phelps died “before midnight” on Wednesday. His daughter, Shirley Phelps-Roper, also confirmed news of the death to the Topeka Capital-Journal.

However, at least one family member seemed to dispute the reports of his siblings, as attorney Jonathan Phelps told WIBW: “Pastor Phelps is doing just fine.” The network notes this could be a spiritual reference.

“I can tell you that Fred Phelps is having some health problems,” WBC spokesman Steve Drain told the Lawrence Journal-World Sunday. “He’s an old man, and old people get health problems.”

A spokesperson for the Westboro Baptist Church was not immediately available for further comment Thursday.

KS Anti-Gay Marriage Bill Declared Dead By Republican State Senator

Another victory!!!

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — An anti-gay marriage proposal that roiled Kansas politics is dead, the chairman of a state Senate committee assigned to review it said Tuesday.

But the declaration from Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Jeff King didn’t appear likely to end the debate over providing legal protections for people and organizations refusing for religious reasons to provide goods and services to gay and lesbian couples. King, an Independence Republican, said he’ll still have hearings on whether Kansas needs to enact religious liberty protections in case the federal courts strike down the state’s gay-marriage ban.

The House approved a bill last week to prohibit government sanctions or anti-discrimination lawsuits when individuals, groups and businesses cite their religious beliefs in refusing to provide goods, services, accommodations and employment benefits related to a marriage, civil union, domestic partnership, or a celebration of such relationships.
