Love or Basketball

When Haley Videckis and Layana White first saw each other, it was — where else? — on the basketball court.

In February 2013, the women’s team at Arizona State University was facing off against its biggest rival, the University of Arizona. Videckis played for ASU, White played for U of A, and they both had a lot to prove.

“That game was lit,” Videckis remembered, laughing. ASU were down by 2 points when, 22 seconds before the buzzer sounded, Videckis sunk a 3-pointer — her third of the game — elbowing Arizona out of the lead for a final score of 59–58. White watched Videckis hit her incredible last-second shot and thought, Who is that girl?

24 May 1988; Section 28

silence_equals_death_6383

What impact do laws against homosexuality have on those “too young to understand”? It’s often something none of us thinks about.

That is not sex, he said. The teacher had just shown a series of sex education videos and asked us what we thought. I’d raised my hand and said they were good but did not mention gay sex. I was 11.

That is not sex, he said. It was 1988, the year a new law was enacted that forbade local authorities and teachers from “promoting homosexuality”. Today is exactly 30 years since that law (which was not repealed until 2003) came into effect. It was so vague as to muzzle everyone working in schools from mentioning gay people. It was the height of the AIDS epidemic.

In the confusion and furore surrounding Section 28 (often called Clause 28) of the Local Government Act 1988, teachers – those we entrust to prepare the young for the world – became mute through fear of contravening it. Pupils like me did not know at the time that teachers had been prohibited from talking about homosexuality, because they had been prohibited from talking about homosexuality.

Gay man says pope told him: ‘God made you this way’

Unprecedented.

MADRID (Reuters) – A Chilean man who suffered clerical sexual abuse has said Pope Francis told him in a private conversation that God had made him gay and loved him that way, according to the Spanish newspaper El Pais.

The Vatican declined to comment on the report but, if confirmed, it would be a striking statement of tolerance towards homosexuality, which the Church has condemned as an immoral disorder if it is actively practised.

Jeers turn to Cheers for One NJ Couple

I must admit these guys are adorable. I hope they remain together. And I’m glad this situation turned out better than expected.

It was a clear, cool Friday night in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, and Theodore Vidal and his boyfriend, Colin Beyers, were walking back from their first prom together, holding hands in their navy blue matching tuxes and now-wrinkled pink bowties when they heard the raucous sounds of boys yelling ahead of them on the boardwalk.

They tensed and tightened their grips, preparing for the inevitable jeer, sharp insult, or crude joke that is usually lobbed at them in this part of town.
“It’s south Jersey. Guys pick on us for being gay a lot,” explained 17-year-old Vidal, a junior at Lacey High School. “It’s an area where you normally would get picked on and discriminated against.”

Pulse Survivor Claims VP Wants LGBT People in Concentration Camps

I’d like to see that putrid piece of humanity try to put me in a camp. If it’s true that Ms Reid made homophobic comments, it can be allowed that people change their views on any number of subjects. I feel like so often we want straight people to accept us and understand us when they hate us, but then when they do see the light, no one is willing to accept it. Pence, on the other hand, is unrepentant.

Pulse shooting survivor Brandon Wolf has faced anger after saying that US Vice President Mike Pence wants to put gay people in “concentration camps.”

Wolf made the comments while talking to embattled MSNBC host Joy Reid, who has come under pressure over homophobic blog entries posted to her blog prior to her rise to fame.

Wolf – a survivor of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando who heads LGBT advocacy group The Dru Project – urged LGBT people to focus their fire on the Trump administration rather than Reid.

Plan to Allow Docs to Refuse to Treat Trans People Set to Go Forward

Well isn’t that just peachy? Fuck every last mother fucker in this regime and beyond. I swear to god I’d spit in the face of any politician that tried to talk to me. Of ANY fucking party.

The Trump Administration’s plan to allow doctors to deny treatment to trans people is set to be implemented.

The policy recently announced by the Trump administration would allow healthcare professionals to refuse to treat LGBT+ people if they have a religious objection.

U Street Assault Victim Gets New Teeth Free

Dr Banks is a hero!

A DC man has a reason to smile again after a terrifying assault incident along U Street last week.

Zach Link and another man were seriously injured during an assault, that is being described as a suspected hate crime by police.

Link had a broken nose, as well as several cuts and bruises and broken teeth from the April 16 attack, where three suspects shouted homophobic slurs as Link and his friend were attacked near a gay bar at 10th Street and U Street in Northwest D.C.

A DC dentist, Dr. Christopher Banks at Capital Cosmetic Dentistry heard Link’s story and was able to help provide him with a new smile at no cost.

Gay Sex for Rent

I’m sure Buzzfeed chose to conduct their investigation on Facebook because Facebook has been under fire for the whole debacle with Cambridge Analytica, but let’s be honest: Craig’s List still exists and I’m quite sure all this shit happens on that site, too. And a number of lesser known sites as well. Aside from that, though, what is worse is the climate we’ve created that’s causing these young men to put themselves in this situation. We’ve wiped out trade schools by pushing the need for a college degree in order to get ahead in life and now we have millions of people who can’t find work. We should work harder to change the country rather than bashing one company for what it allows or doesn’t allow on its site.

BuzzFeed News has uncovered dozens of ads on Facebook and other sites that reveal a new LGBT dimension to the housing crisis: young men lured into “sex for rent” contracts to avoid sleeping rough. In a multi-part investigation we expose the truth about these landlords, as young men speak out about being raped, beaten, drugged, infected with HIV and treated as domestic slaves.

States Banning Conversion Therapy

So so thrilled to see this as reality!! We don’t need to be “fixed” as there’s nothing wrong with us.

A record number of jurisdictions this year are taking aim at conversion therapy for minors: an attempt to change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity through tactics as obvious as hypnosis or as subtle as inducing shame.

Almost 50 bills have been introduced in 24 states targeting conversion therapy, which has been discredited by dozens of medical associations and child-welfare institutions. On Tuesday, 11 of them — including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Counseling Association — released a letter urging states to make such bills a priority.

“Being LGBTQ is not an illness,” said Xavier Persad, legislative counsel for the Human Rights Campaign, an LGBTQ rights advocacy group. “It is false that being LGBTQ is wrong and a disorder.”
