LGBT Splinter Group From Migrant Caravan Arrives in Tijuana

It’s a shame that these people – not just those who identify as LGBT – will be turned away from the US. This is not who we are.

A group of LGBT migrants who were part of the massive caravan slowly marching toward the U.S. made it to the coastal border city of Tijuana on Sunday. They are the first of more than 3,600 Central Americans to reach the northern border of Mexico.

About 80 migrants, the majority of whom identify as LGBT, splintered off from the larger group in Mexico City after weeks of what they say was discriminatory treatment by local residents and other travelers, Honduran migrant Cesar Mejia told reporters at a news conference on Sunday.

“Whenever we arrived at a stopping point the LGBT community was the last to be taken into account in every way. So our goal was to change that and say, ‘This time we are going to be first,’ ” Mejia said.

Jaden Smith Comes Out

Frankly, I’m not sure why the original story has a question mark in the headline, but whatevs. It’s good to see Jaden being so, well, blunt about how he feels. 😉

Jaden Smith may have just come out! The actor known for his beautiful non-binary fashion announced that he has a boyfriend at the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival in Los Angeles. Smith claims his boyfriend is none other than Tyler, the Creator, who was hosting the festival.

Said Smith to the crowd: “I wanna tell you, Tyler doesn’t want to say, but Tyler’s my mother f***ing boyfriend and he’s been my mother f***ing boyfriend my whole f***ing life!”

LGBT Candidate Winners in Mid-Terms

Let’s celebrate this return to the Cafe with a highlight of the LGBT winners in this mid-term election cycle.

At the National level:

Colorado has it’s first openly gay governor in Jared Polis.
Kansas elected it’s first Lesbian and Native American to congress in Sharice Davids.
New Hampshire has it’s first gay member of Congress in Chris Pappas.
Another Lesbian was elected to Congress representing Minnesota, Angie Craig.

At the state level:

New Hampshire has a pair of transgender women elected to its House of Representatives – Gerri Canon and Lisa Bunker
Kansas also has Susan Ruiz and Brandon Woodard added to its state legislature.
Malcolm Kenyatta is the first black gay man elected to Pennsylvania’s legislature.
Teri Johnston is Key West, FL’s first lesbian mayor.

And finally, though he is not gay himself, Zach Wahls – who you may recall defended his two moms in 2011 to the Iowa House of Representatives now represents Iowa Senate District 37.

We also saw Massachusettes vote to protect transgender rights.

So not only did the Democrats take back the House of Representatives, both LGBT candidates as well as women in general, won BIG across the country.

Thoughts

To Anyone Still Around:

If you’re still here, I’m going to start posting again. If you’re not, well, I’m still going to start posting again. Perhaps this time I can find a way to bring in more readers and get more feedback.

I have missed posting. There are so many positive things that I’ve wanted to share with you, but I said I would decide for sure how things would go after the mid-term elections and we’re nearly a week beyond those elections. There have been some pretty shitty stuff going on in regard to the LGBT community, which I share as well, but I feel the need to keep pressing forward. We all do.

I’m still not entirely satisfied with the government and won’t be until things change completely, but I feel things are moving in the right direction. If there’s anything I managed to save that is worth sharing, I will begin doing so within the next 24 hours. This first week of sharing will be sporadic because I’m stressed at work, but otherwise…

I’M BACK!!!

Hopeless

To Anyone Out there Following this blog:

I gotta say I feel pretty hopeless right now. This feeling comes on the heels of the revelation that Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy will retire July 31, 2018. To me, this means an even more Conservative judge will be put in his place and everything that we have accomplished will be reversed in the blink of an eye. We see daily how this new megalomaniac in charge of this country has reversed every single thing that President Obama and others before him worked so hard to put in place. This includes marriage equality. I see everything we have ever accomplished – going all the way back to Stonewall – being erased.

At this point I feel that they should tattoo a number on my forearm and strip me of my identity. The megalomaniac in charge of this country admires dictators, so why wouldn’t he follow in the footsteps of Hitler?

I think I’m going to take a break from blogging for a few months. See where we are by year’s end. If things have improved then I will return. If not, I will close the blog permanently.

Your thoughts are welcome, as always.

ESPN’s Body Issue Features 1st Gay Couple

These two attractive women deserve this honor. So thrilled to see ESPN taking this critical step.

Soccer player Megan Rapinoe and WNBA star Sue Bird just became the first openly gay couple to appear on the cover of ESPN’s iconic body issue.

“It’s important for people to come out. Visibility is important,” Rapinoe, 32, told ESPN’s Jemele Hill in an interview published Monday. “It’s important for there to be a first one on the cover [of the body issue], or whatever. Just in terms of the culture and society, someone has to do it.”

Starbucks Goes the Extra Mile

Wow. This is just amazing. Kinda makes their over-priced shit worth purchasing. I’m glad they are taking the lead in helping their transgender employees be who they truly are.

Starbucks has announced plans to offer comprehensive care for transgender employees, covering several procedures that are usually excluded by insurers.

In the new plan announced on Monday, Starbucks said that in addition to covering bottom surgery, they will now cover all other medical steps in a person’s transition.

This will cover several other procedures that were previously considered cosmetic – which can often be hard to obtain as insurers typically refuse to cover them.

Transgender Woman Kicked from DC Restaurant

I love how restaurants and other public places will bully these men and women until they get pushed back. Then they’re all “that’s not what we meant”. Bull-fucking-shit.

When a transgender woman got up to use the woman’s bathroom at a restaurant, she said she was asked to show her ID.

And when she refused, she said she got kicked out.

Charlotte Clymer, who identifies as female, works for the Human Rights Campaign. She said she was at Cuba Libre Restaurant and Rum Bar in Washington on Friday with a group of friends for a bachelorette party.

Clymer wrote on Twitter that the group was having a good time. But things shifted when she and a friend went to use the bathroom.

On her way there, an attendant at the restaurant asked Clymer for her ID, she wrote. But, she said, he didn’t ask anyone else for theirs.
