Violence. Period.

There’s too much hate in the world. Not only against LGBT folk, but of course that’s the main focus. Why has it become such a huge problem to be different than others? To have different skin color, to practice a different religion, to believe that weapons should be regulated (here in the US), but above all that love is for all, to whoever your heart deems worthy? Why are we allowing hate to rule us? To shame us. To destroy love. It makes me sick every time there’s an article of this nature, but I don’t know what the answer is anymore, because the majority still don’t want love to win.

TORONTO — When Alihan finally made his way home, he could barely move. His badly bruised back had a rotting smell to it he couldn’t get rid of, no matter how much he showered. He had been beaten so badly during the weeks he spent in prison without charge that the blood under his skin began to dry, curl, and become infected. He had a high fever and needed help using to the washroom, but his family was too afraid to bring him to a hospital or a specialist.

A soft-spoken man in his twenties with short brown hair, Alihan is one of dozens of men the authorities have identified as gay who have been captured and beaten in the Russian republic of Chechnya since last February.

“I could have died,” Alihan told BuzzFeed News in an interview conducted in Russian. “When I stood up, I couldn’t breathe.”

Adam Rippon Rejects Meeting VP Twice

His name is Adam Rippon and he’s the first openly gay Winter Olympian. He’s a figure skater who is poised to compete in the Winter Olympics in Peyongchang, South Korea. Can’t say I blame him for rejecting any interviews with the Vice President. After all, despite the claims of the Vice Presidential staff, he is notoriously anti-gay. If I were Adam Rippon, there would never be an interview even post-Olympics.

Adam Rippon, the first openly gay athlete to win a place on the US Winter Olympics team, turned down an invitation to meet Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday, the second time he’s done so.

“I don’t want to distract from the competition or make this too much for my competitors and my teammates,” the figure skater, 28, said on Thursday.

LGBT History: The Slide

I think this year I’m going to delve more into LGBT history. Not just The Stonewall Riots, but lesser known events in other areas of the country. If you know of something I should cover, please let me know.

As moral as the general public has tried to be over the centuries, we who love someone of the same sex have always been around and no matter what anyone does to us, we continue to rise like majestic phoenixes out of the ashes. Several months ago, a friend of mine recommended that I tune into a podcast called The Bowery Boys because I love history and they cover the history of New York City from its days as a Dutch colony right up to the present. These guys have over 250 podcasts as well as some blog posts that cover bits of history. One such post I recently read is about New York’s notorious “fairy resort” – a place called The Slide. They discuss this club as part of an analysis of the accuracy of the limited television series The Alienist.

You can read about it here and I hope something else will grab your attention on the BB site and you can learn more about NYC.

Book Review – Sworn to the Night

I don’t really read a lot of specifically lgbt fiction, but I felt compelled to write my first ever review for this blog and this particular writer with his latest and greatest because it features two women as the main players in this drama.

The author is Craig Schaefer and I discovered him quite by happy accident through BookBub. I don’t consider myself a fan of dark urban fantasy, what Mr Schaefer writes, but I am a HUGE fan of his. He has three full series and this book that I’m reviewing is Book 1 of a trilogy. My first introduction to Mr Schaefer’s writing was his book titled Harmony Black about an FBI agent who works for a super secret branch of the FBI battling more than just the average criminal syndicate.

I’m not sure what I can say about Craig Schaefer that hasn’t already been said a hundredfold. His writing is action packed, concise and the plot is constantly in motion. Just when you think some tangent is going to be irrelevant, he brings it all right back to the main plot with envious ease. He is the sort of writer I wish I could be. He’s the sort of writer whose books are hard to put down.

Amazon summarizes Sworn to the Night best:

Marie Reinhart is an NYPD detective on the trail of a serial killer. When she sleeps, though, she dreams of other lives; she dreams of being a knight, in strange wars and strange worlds. On the other side of the city, Nessa Roth is a college professor trapped in a loveless marriage, an unwilling prop in a political dynasty. She’s also a fledgling witch, weaving poppets and tiny spells behind closed doors.

When Marie’s case draws her into Nessa’s path, sparks fly. What comes next is more than a furtive whirlwind affair; it’s the first pebbles of an avalanche. Nessa and Marie are the victims of a curse that has pursued them across countless lifetimes; a doom designed to trap them in a twisted living fairy tale, with their romance fated to end in misery and death.

They aren’t going out without a fight. As they race to uncover the truth, forces are in motion across the country. In Las Vegas, a professional thief is sent on a deadly heist. In a Detroit back alley, witches gather under the guidance of a mysterious woman in red. Just outside New York, an abandoned zoo becomes the hunting-ground for servants of a savage and alien king. The occult underground is taking sides and forming lines of battle. Time is running out, and Nessa and Marie have one chance to save themselves, break the curse, and demand justice.

This time, they’re writing their own ending.

The best part of all of Craig Schaefer’s writing is that he doesn’t shy away from including lgbt characters. All of his characters – even those of the underworld – have some aspect that I think anyone can identify with.

If you love dark urban fantasy novels, I cannot recommend any of Mr Schaefer’s books enough. You won’t be disappointed. He is a master storyteller and a extraordinarily gifted one. Still unsure if these books are for you? He’s got a short story on his website so you can get a taste of his style: Drive.

American Suing US Gov’t For Denying Her Child Citizenship

This seems rather convoluted, but why wouldn’t the woman from Italy simply become a naturalized citizen of the US?

Allison Blixt was standing with her wife, Stefania Zaccari, at the counter of the US embassy in London when a member of staff started asking her whose eggs were used to make their first child, Lucas.

It was 2015, two months after Lucas was born, and the beginning of an interrogation that would leave Blixt stunned and lead, this week, to a landmark lawsuit.

The official told her that despite Blixt being a US citizen, despite her and Zaccari being married, and despite both of them being named on Lucas’s birth certificate as the parents, because Blixt did not give birth to Lucas – and Zaccari, an Italian citizen, did – she could not register him as a US citizen.

It would mean they would never be able to return to Blixt’s home country and live as a family. The same would not have been the case, she told BuzzFeed News from their home in south London, had she been in a heterosexual relationship.

Make America Gay Again

This is brilliant. Cheers to whoever these neighbors are!!

The residents who live next door to the Colorado home where Vice President Mike Pence is staying with his family for the Christmas holiday posted a rainbow “Make America Gay Again” banner. They placed the banner on a pillar that is at the end of both homes’ driveways, according to the Aspen Times.

“You couldn’t miss it,” Pitkin County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Buglione said of the sign that was reportedly hung by the daughters of the couple who live in the home. The people who live next door apparently were a bit apprehensive about hanging the banner in front of the law enforcement and Secret Service officers that were stationed there. “He was real sheepish and thought he might be confronted by the Secret Service or deputies who’d tell him he couldn’t do it,” Pitkin County Sheriff Joe DiSalvo said. “When they said, ‘We’re not here to control your free speech rights,’ they came out with chili and began feeding them.”

Formula 1 Driver Yells at Nephew on Instagram

It’s one thing for you to disagree with how your sibling is raising her/his child. It’s one thing for you to disagree with allowing one gender to wear the clothes of another. But it is Super Assholey of you to yell at a child and then post it on the Internet for millions to watch AND IT NEVER FUCKING GOES AWAY. Lewis Hamilton is the ultimate lowlife asshole scum.

Lewis Hamilton, the reigning Formula One World Champion, has yelled at a small child, mocking him for wearing a princess dress.

Hamilton, 32, took issue with his nephew’s Christmas present – to such an extent that he shouted at him on camera.

And then he uploaded the video to his 5.7 million Instagram followers.

Because when you loudly mock a child for dressing up in a costume which just so happens to go against gender norms, you want the whole world to see – apparently.

I Cried Today

I cried today
and at first I didn’t know why.
Then I realized
Christianity destroys families.
It forces a man to hate his own
flesh and blood until it’s too late.
It forces a man to lose a daughter
to suicide and rob him of the chance to change.
Although I should condemn this man
for being so full of hate,
instead I feel sorry.
He looked lost.
He looked scared.
He realized in his heart it was too late.
He couldn’t bring his daughter back.
He couldn’t love her the way he should’ve.
He could only do the right thing
and stand up to a man that hates
people like his daughter and call them
perverts.
Now all I want to do is reach out to him.
